Nanoscience and Nanotechnology embraces the art of forming artificial nano-sized structures with atomic precision, their characterization and utilization for studying new phenomena and for conceiving novel devices and systems unattainable with conventional or traditional technologies. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology takes advantage of physical, chemical, and biological principles that are set by the nanometer size. By its very nature, research in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology calls for truly interdisciplinary efforts, exploiting physical, chemical, biological and medical sciences, together with state-of-the-art engineering expertise.
Keeping in view of the importance of the nanoscience and nanotechnology, Symbiosis International (Deemed University), has established “Symbiosis Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology” (SCNN). The mission of the this centre is to promote forefront basic and applied research in the fields of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, with potential applications towards fulfilling national and social strategic needs.
Research activities at SCNN focus on
- Advanced nanomaterials synthesis, growth and analysis techniques as well as the development of adapted theoretical and numerical tools. ,
- Multidisciplinary ultrasensitive sensors developments for Point of care diagnostic systems and environmental pollution monitoring.
The Centre will create opportunities for international exchange of scientists and students, set up collaborative arrangements; conduct seminars / workshops/conferences/extension lectures to promote Nanoscience & Nanotechnology; establish joint collaborative programs with the up-coming industries in the field of Nanotechnology and promote interdisciplinary/ multidisciplinary scientific research.
Dr. Atul Kulkarni is heading SCNN in the capacity of Research professor since July 2017. He received his MS (1995) from Department of Instrumentation Science, University of Pune and Ph. D. from Department of Physics, University of Pune in 2005, India. During and prior to his Ph.D. pursuit, he worked in Indian industries for more than 17 years (from 1989 to 2005) in different disciplines. His key achievements were total indigenization of (i) Ekran power supply module which is used in MIG-29 and Sukhoi aircrafts and (ii) “Audio-Visual warning devices” for Indian Military which is in use in T-72 and BMP military tanks.
In Dec. 2006, he was offered postdoctoral fellowship at SKKU, the leading “world class university” in South Korea. Since then, he is actively involved in multidisciplinary sensor development and Nano-bio materials for device integration. In the recent past, he has published more than 100+ research papers in peer-reviewed international journals. There are 10+ patents (Korean, US and PCT) to his credit. He has been invited in USA, Australia, Germany, Spain and Italy to present his novel research outcomes. His most momentous accomplishment was the Samsung Award for “Best Prototype Development of SPR Sensor for Biomedical Applications”. In 2012, he received prestigious Brain Pool Fellowship of KOFST (Govt. of Korea) to utilize his expertise in developing cutting-edge technology for the host Korean Company.
